A dock in Brazil where close to a million slaves landed from Africa has been declared a Unesco world heritage site. Valongo Wharf, in Rio de Janeiro, was the largest arrival point for slaves in Brazil, the main destination for the trade in the Americas. Nicknamed “slave wharf”, as many as 900,000 Africans were held at the harbour to recover from their journeys across the Atlantic before being sold on at markets. Many did not survive and were buried in nearby mass graves.

The Airspace Operations Command in Brasilia has kicked off operations of the Geostationary Satellite for Defense and Strategic Communications (SGDC) on Wednesday (July 5). The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) will be in charge of operation and monitoring the satellite and will cooperate with the Army and Navy. The $843.55 million satellite, which was launched into space in May, will provide security for government and Armed Forces communications and, in the short term, help expand broadband services to remote areas of the country. BRUSSELS - The main points of market access in a trade deal between the South American Mercosur bloc and the European Union need to be concluded by December, Brazil's chief negotiator said on Thursday. The EU and Mercosur have committed to a series of negotiations until the end of the year in what both parties say is a last-ditch effort at sealing a deal that has suffered a series of setbacks since talks first began in 1999.
Petrobras should cut the maximum amount of natural gas it buys from neighboring Bolivia in half in an effort to encourage domestic importers and distributors to enter the market, according to a Brazilian government study. The study by a Mines and Energy Ministry research arm, recommended that Brazil's state-owned oil firm cap gas purchases from Bolivia's Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos SA at 16 million cubic meters a day of gas.
Netherlands Fugro has been awarded a further two-year contract by Petrobras to provide comprehensive inspection, repair and maintenance (IRM) and pipeline inspection services in Brazil. Industrial production in Brazil registered a growth of 0.8 percent in May according to data from the IBGE (Brazilian Statistical Bureau). Although this is the second consecutive positive rate recorded by the Brazilian industry, some sectors, like the automobile industry still forecast weak months ahead.With the results of May, the industry has accumulated a growth of 1.9 percent in the last two months, compensating for the retraction by 1.6 percent seen in March.
