Ali to advance talks with Lula on Guyana-Brazil road link

Guyana President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Discussions on the expansion of the Guyana to Brazil road link will be advanced at an upcoming meeting between Guyana President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva May at the end of May.

Guyana’s Department of Public Information (DPI) said President Ali made the announcement during a recent tourism forum, and discussed the potential for this to boost the sector.

Last year, the head of state held talks with former Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro on the proposed road link.

Government is spending US$190 million to construct the Linden to Mabura Hill Road, a concrete that will provide relief to travellers who have only been able to travel through that part of the country’s administrative region #10 via a dirt road.  The road will eventually expand to the township of Lethem in Region #9, providing a 24-hour road link for commuters and the business community, who have otherwise had to travel via helicopter or through a dirt road.  That same thoroughfare is expected to link with neighbouring Brazil.

The linkage is expected to improve business ties between Guyana and Brazil, two of the most important oil producers of the next decade. Guyana is expected to exceed 1.6 million barrels per day (bpd) by the end of the decade, while Brazil is expected to surpass 5 million bpd in the next decade, as today’s powerhouses temper output.
