Amsterdam, 25 August 2024 — When Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his former US colleague Bill Clinton met during a recent telephone conversation earlier this week they discussed climate change, energy transition and the protection of forests, among several other environmental issues.
What was direly missing in their conversation was the amazing and incredible damage illegal Brazilian goldminers cause in the Republic of Suriname. Between 40 and 50.000 illegal Brazilian garimpeiros have penetrated the territory of Suriname and settled down with their own complete infrastructure including Brazilian radio- and tv stations and other media.
The damage is going almost completely unnoticed as the mainstream international media such as the Financial Times, Reuters or Bloomberg and New York Times, nor the little noticed local FM radio stations tend to address this issue as a result of lack of funds for research.
According to the Planalto Palace, president Lula of Brazil was invited by the Clinton Foundation to an event on climate change on Sept. 23 and 24, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. But Bill Clinton, is not only scheduled to pay attention to the presidential elections in his country, he also is not aware of the danger and damage the illegal garimpeiros afflict to Suriname as he has no information, because the media both in Suriname or Brazil as others, fail to report this humanitarian tragedy.
” Former president Clinton referred to the progress made by Brazil in combating deforestation and in favor of the energy transition. His Brazilian colleague, Lula reiterated the government’s commitment to the energy transition and the protection of forests, stating that he intends to present ambitious results for COP 29 in Baku (Azerbaijan) and COP 30 in Belém,“ the press office in Brasilia said in a statement.
”Lula also congratulated the former American president on his speech yesterday at the Democratic Party Convention, highlighting the importance of strengthening democracy in the face of the rise of extremism in the world,” the Brazilian Government added.
Clinton strongly supported the presidential candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris and was heavily critical of the Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Also participating in Thursday’s talks were Lula’s Special Advisor Celso Amorim and Foreign Ministry Secretary-General Maria Laura da Rocha.
