Amsterdam, 19 feb. 2025– SBM Offshore is taking the lead in developing Suriname’s first offshore oil project. The company is already fully engaged in training local talent, well before the first Floating Production Storage and Offloading unit (FPSO) becomes operational in 2028 for TotalEnergies’ GranMorgu project.
“We started three years earlier than usual,” says Pierre Gaté, Country Entry-Manager of SBM Offshore Suriname, during the Suriname Awareness Symposium. “Our experience in Guyana and other countries has taught us that an early start is crucial for maximizing local involvement.”
In collaboration with Technip Energies, SBM Offshore is working on an innovative, fully electrically powered FPSO.
This installation will be a first for Suriname.
The project goes beyond technical aspects – the company is heavily invested in local development through scholarship programs, technical training, and support for local suppliers.
The ambition is significant: SBM Offshore aims to match the success achieved in Brazil, where 95-98% of offshore personnel consists of local employees. “We want to achieve this level in Suriname as well,” says Gaté. “It’s about understanding the local labor market and aligning our initiatives accordingly.”
